Potato candy cake decorating, life and death.

December 21, 2011

So this is still a work in progress, but it’s  Arlo’s model of Moominpappa in his boat which we are decorating our Christmas cake with this year – there’s more to add, like a lighthouse (the reference book is Tove Jansson’s Moominpappa at Sea) and the reason this makes it to this blog is that the icing’s made with mashed potato – see previous post.

Arlo, Jess, Grannie and I made potato candy – well Jess and I did the marzipanning while Grannie and Arlo made the potato candy icing  (about 1 part smooth, unsalted, unbuttered mashed potato to 6 parts icing/powdered sugar). Mix until it forms a malleable dough. We added a bit of desiccated coconut this time just for fun.

It’s much easier than Royal Icing, and easier to mold and it doesn’t set like a rock and break your teeth when you try to eat it. Tomorrow  we’ll finish the decorating and maybe add a little colour….

It’s Ruth’s Birthday today so Happy Birthday Ruth!  and it’s the winter solstice.

It was also Ron Richards’, aka Allen Saddler, funeral today: Ron was a writer, activist, socialist and humanitarian whom I’ve known for over 20 years. Sam sang a Max Miller song, we all sang “We Shall Overcome” and Jazz musicians played great music to send him on his way – he’d have loved it.
