Rice is Nice

March 7, 2012

Just when I thought it would be nice to have some potatoes again – or even a little pasta – the beloved comes home with a bag of rice. Not just any old bag, but 5 kilos of basmati rice – that’s about 11 lbs. Quite a lot of rice and in a nice bag too.

It’s funny how the presence of a lot of something, in the food category, almost enslaves you, trapping you  in to thinking  how to use it before it goes off.  As Jess said today,  all we ever talk about is root vegetables – celeriac schnitzel being a case in point!

However, one of  the good things about rice is that it keeps – for centuries apparently if stored properly, so there’s no rush:  the 5 kilos of rice won’t be so tyrannical. Anyway there are still parsnips to eat…
