Waiting for Poppy

April 19, 2012

The return of the travelling daughter is imminent, but her plane has been delayed.  The beloved had already set off to pick her up from Bristol airport when she phoned, but fortunately he hadn’t got too far. He turned round and came home in time to cook diner.  Now that’s what I call perfect timing.

Arlo was hoping to stay up to see his sister return, but as she’s not due back til midnight and it’s school tomorrow, he’s been sent to bed. “I hate being the youngest,” he said, “If I wasn’t the youngest I’d be allowed to stay up.” It seemed cruel to point out that it’s being 10 that is the deciding factor not being the youngest.

He decided that if he wasn’t going to be allowed to stay up, then he would have a decent pudding and so helped himself to the last of the frozen raspberries (microwaved for 20 seconds),  the last of the honeycomb ice cream and a piece of coconut cake. I made him wait to eat it while I took a photograph.

He was reasonably patient because he was reading the Beano, but eventually he looked up. “Am I going to get to eat my pudding or what? ” he said.
