Blue Popcorn

April 22, 2012

Poppy was working today in Sarah’s shop and Arlo took her up a flask of coffee – it being a Sunday and there being nowhere in Totnes to get coffee on a Sunday…….
He came home with some purple bouncy putty and  wrote  a request – or was it an order? with it on the kitchen table.
So it was decided and all that was left was to make popcorn. In the cupboard was a packet of blue popcorn – well it looked more purplish really, but I thought we’d give it a go. “Can you make it sweet popcorn rather than just plain?” Arlo said. I’ve never made sweet popcorn before and I feared it might be really sticky, but I like a challenge.
I dragged the duck popcorn maker out from under the dresser – it’s cheating really, but it makes me smile – and popped some blue popcorn. Calling it “blue” is possibly a contravention of the trade descriptions act. There was maybe a hint of grey to the popped corn, but that was it. It didn’t look or taste rude either.
For the sweet bit I made a toffee sauce: about 2oz butter and 2oz brown sugar heated slowly in a pan with a teaspoon of water. Stir until the sugar has dissolved, and then add a tablespoon of double cream. Bring to the boil, still stirring, and boil  for a couple of minutes and then remove it from the heat. It looked a bit caramel like.
When it cooled a bit I drizzled some over the popcorn and stirred it well. It was quite sticky so I spread it on a tray and then put it in a very cool oven – about 50C – for about half an hour. When I took it out it was pretty much set and not sticky.
It might have been OK without putting it in the oven, but if I’d left it in full view it would have all been eaten – especially as Halo and Damon arrived this evening.
