Useful children?

July 4, 2012

The morning sky looked quite similar to Arlo’s morning face. A bit grey and very miserable. Arlo didn’t want breakfast –  a sure sign that he’s not feeling well – and he didn’t want to eat anything until well after lunch time, only managing a piece of toast. I’m not a sympathetic mother when it comes to illness as my children will probably attest.

By this afternoon though the sun came out and the sky was blue. It was hot and sunny! Arlo felt well enough to manage a bit of cake. It was the cake he had decorated. Purple icing. Enough to make anyone feel sick.

Nice cake though, and, because it’s got almonds in it, the beloved doesn’t think it’s just empty calories. It’s simple  too – 4oz each of soft butter, caster sugar, self raising flour, ground almonds; 2eggs and 2 fl oz milk. Mix all together, bake in a 9″ round cake tin for 30 mins in a moderate oven.   Cool. Ice. We put ground almonds in with the icing sugar  too – along with the red and blue food colouring which I will measure out with a syringe next time.

By dinner time the sun was still shining and Arlo confessed himself to be starving and ate an enormous amount. And a bit more cake.

Then the sky darkened and the rain returned. The boy went to bed feeling ill again. So it’s official. My son’s a barometer.
