I’ve been a bit remiss in blogging for the last few days. It’s probably something to do with the weather and the collective vitamin D deficiency that as a nation we’re suffering from. Today the sun came out a little,  but I also got rained on – though it was more of a mizzle than a rain – the kind of stuff that makes you wet but doesn’t warrant wearing a coat. It was reasonably warm, but it’s just not summer as we like to think of it.  Still it’s better than yesterday when  it was so wet and cold that it just wasn’t funny. Arlo came home from school and had to dive into the shower because he was so muddy, and Frank’s rain soaked clothes have taken all day to dry.

Today though it’s Pietro’s birthday. Chocolate cake to celebrate. And cheese flan – which I didn’t think had enough cheese in, but Rella and the beloved thought was nice. The cake is Julia’s chocolate cake from the Schumacher college’s Gaia’s kitchen cookbook written by my friend Julia – in whose kitchen I first tasted this cake. It’s light, so you can add a wicked topping, and very chocolately.

Grease and line 9″ round cake tin. Put 3oz very soft butter into a bowl, add 3oz light brown sugar and two large tablespoons of golden syrup. Mix well. Add 2 eggs and beat well. Gradually add 5oz self raising flour, 2oz cocoa powder, and 5fl oz milk with half a teaspoon of baking powder dissolved in it, alternating between milk and flour/cocoa until it’s all mixed in.  pour into the tin and bake for about 40 minutes. Decorate with chocolate ganache icing, a candle and some white chocolate stars. Happy Birthday Pietro!
