St Swithin’s Day

July 15, 2012

Boo has pointed out the similarity between Charlie Booker’s comments on the weather and my own. The difference is that he’s a bit of a Johnny come lately to this weather commenting game – and he’s not offering much in the way of practical help and of course he gets paid handsomely for his comments. Hmmm. My idea of cooking our way into summer has a lot going for it and all it takes is a few more people to believe and get on the bandwagon. My elderflower champagne is showing willing and has started to fizz, so maybe this is the start of something.

And, today it’s St Swithin’s Day and the rhyme goes:

St. Swithin’s day if thou dost rain
For forty days it will remain
St. Swithin’s day if thou be fair
For forty days ’twill rain nae mair.

It didn’t rain! We went to Bantham!

It was a bit windy, but the sky was blue and the sun was out. The beloved, Arlo, Frank, Peter and I had French bread and cheese sandwiches (Frank’s bread of choice), hot chocolate (well the beloved had to be content with black tea because I forgot the milk – he was very sanguine about it I thought) and crisps. And an apple. And some custard creams.

Frank and Peter are demons with a bat and ball, and even Arlo managed to hit a few returns.

Let’s hope St Swithin makes good…
