Mackerel sky?

July 26, 2012

Yesterday it was really hot. Beautiful! But, I saw a fat man drinking a diet coke (I have a theory about fat people drinking diet coke – it’s to do with their taste buds being dulled by aspartame. I won’t expand on this –  and anyway it may be a massive and unwarranted generalisation) and smoking a roll up outside the Happy Apple complaining about the heat.

I want it to be known to the weather gods or other powers that be that I like the weather as it is. And so do lots of people. We went swimming in the outdoor unheated pool at Dartington and it was almost warm in the water. Arlo was still reading a book in the garden at 7pm in the sunshine. We like the weather.

Today it’s a little hazy and there’s a breeze, but it’s 9pm and the thermometer is still reading 20c, so that’s all good. Just a bit of summer food needed to prop up the weather.

The beloved and Chris went on a fishing trip and caught the sun as well as some mackerel. Pretty, shining fish that just needed cleaning and plonking on a tray and cooking for a matter of minutes. We could have barbecued them, but that would’ve taken ages and it’s only worth it if you’re going to cook lots of food.

For some reason we have been deserted by all our children – home grown and Spanish – so it was just Grannie, the Beloved and me eating. We ate the mackerel with a tomato sauce – tomatoes, olive oil, and pepper and salt cooked until mushy and then some basil added and blitzed with a stick blender for a minute to get rid of the lumps – and new potatoes and broccoli. Nice flavours and the fish less than 6 hours out of the sea. Sustainable too. Come to think of it the sky looked a bit mackerel like…
