Let’s have a boycott…

This morning it rained. It wasn’t cold, but it was wet. The kind of rain that necessitates a coat. Not good. Especially as Paul, Oscar and Mieke are camping at Slapton. As Paul said, “it’s not really beach weather” (I think that’s commendably understated) so they came to Totnes, and the skies cleared and the sun came out.

We had a simple lunch (very simple) and I didn’t think to offer them any cake , which is a pity as I could have fobbed them off with  offered them some delicious carrot cake and some of Grannie’s courgette loaf. Another missed opportunity.

I suspect what they really want is chocolate brownie. With any luck there will be some when we next meet up.

We did grace the Barrel House with our presence. Nice coffee – let’s hope people continue to use independent coffee outlets (shame on the South Hams District Councillors who agreed the Costa Coffee planning application).

Anyway. Chocolate Brownies. Melt 3oz of dark chocolate – the darker the better – with 2oz butter.  Leave to cool a bit if it’s warm and then add 6oz soft brown sugar and two eggs. Then add 3oz self raising flour and  2oz chopped nuts – you don’t have to add nuts – or anything really, but chunks of white chocolate are quite good (and I suppose you could add dried fruit if you don’t share my horror of fruit and chocolate being together). Pour the mixture into a greased and lined an 8″ square tin and bake for about 25 minutes at 180c. It should be a bit squishy when it’s done – it’ll firm up as it cools – and a knife will come out clean – unless you hit a chunk of  molten chocolate.

Keep away from children – and language students.
