pink and white

Arlo and Rella spent the morning playing their clarinets at the Peninsula Clarinet choir rehearsal and then came home and made cupcakes – make of that what you will.cupcakes

They used a recipe from a book, but I don’t know which one so I can’t share it, but clearly the most important thing is the icing and decorations. cupcakes2

The icing has to be butter icing and we don’t like it to taste too buttery so it’s a case of  lots of tasting while you make it. Arlo was in charge.

Put about 2oz soft butter in a bowl and add  a couple of tablespoons of icing sugar. Mix this in and add some more.  Add more icing sugar and mix this in. Taste. Add a tablespoon of water and a teaspoon of vanilla essence and mix it all together. Add more sugar and keep tasting to see when the optimum butter/sugar ratio has been reached. It may need a little more water. Add food colouring, mix and then use.

There were quite a few decorations to choose from ranging from popping candy that had been hanging around so long that it had lost its sense of self (I don’t think they used it) to hundreds and thousands.cupcakes5

There were also those little silver and pink sugar balls that crack teeth, some white chocolate stars (pretty), mini marshmalllows,  and a chocolate flake. These were variously pushed into the pink butter icing that had been spread on each cake – there were a few exceptions that had creamy white icing when Rella had a momentary attack of grownupness in relation to decorations, but thankfully she soon reverted to type.
