January 29, 2013

The weather’s been horrible all day. Grey skies and rain  – sometimes lots, sometimes not so much, but always present. Everyone’s moaning about the weather in a not so British way – people are talking about emigrating – and no one seems to have any energy. Rella, who travelled to Cardiff and back today in the rain, has just phoned me from her bedroom! And I’m a little concerned at the number of kids who walk past our front gate on their way to school with no coats on. I know they’re Devon kids, but c’mon! Arlo says they can’t be bothered to take their coats out of their bags….

Boo’s right – it feels as if a Comet is on the way. All we need is a lonely professor to ask, and a cave to hide in and Moominmamma to bake a cake maybe. I think I need to read the book again…

Anyway, chips are the next best thing. Homemade from potatoes, not frozen oven chips, but you can’t really cook chips in a chip pan on top of the Aga because it takes too long and loses heat and it’s generally a disappointing experience.  However, you can cook them inside the roasting oven. It takes a bit longer, and they don’t have that deep fried taste, but that what chips shops are for. All you have to do is slice some potatoes into chip shapes, put them in a pan with some olive oil and stick them in a very hot oven for half an hour – shake halfway through.

I couldn’t take a picture of the finished product because they were all eaten too quickly…

I’m not the only one talking about emigrating then? But the only place I fancied is Canada and that’s even colder lol 🙂

Northern Spain’s supposed to be nice. Not too hot, not too far and just enough rain for us Westcountry folk to feel at home…
