This photo may not look much, but it represents a real achievement because Arlo and Grannie ate it without realising that the main ingredient was the  much vilified Brussels sprout. It was nice (though Rella was out and therefore so’s the jury).

There is half an onion, a clove of garlic,  a red pepper, a grated carrot and about 15 finely shredded sprouts all thrown into a pan with some olive oil and stirred and fried for a few minutes – well several minutes in fact because the sprouts needed to lose that sprouty look. I added a splash of soy sauce, quite a lot of black pepper, some dried basil and, just before I served it, a knob of butter which I think made all the difference. This was a side dish –  we had sprouts that looked like sprouts as well.

I have to say that these sprouts aren’t as bitter as most – could be that they’re a different variety or that they’ve been got by the frost (which makes things sweeter according to the beloved). Whatever it is I’m relieved. And the three pounds I bought won’t last till the weekend.stir-fry
