This is a picture of the beloved’s birthday cake. It’s a red velvet cake which Arlo saw in the Good Food magazine and wanted to make. The recipe said should have 60mls of food colouring in it. 60 mls! That’s two bottles!  There’s something very wrong with thinking a cake needs that amount of chemicals, and  I don’t like to have food colouring in anything – except maybe cake icing  (and even then it’s only a tiny amount) – so I had to find an alternative.

I chose beetroot, which has the advantage of being one of the beloved’s favourite vegetables. It made a pleasing pink hue to the cak, but the recipe will follow tomorrow. You only have one birthday a year and you can’t spend too much of it being a blog widower…
