Curiouser and curiouser

February 14, 2013

Valentine’s day needs a special cake, but because it’s so soon after the beloved’s birthday and we often have cake left over, I usually make something small  – like heart shaped biscuits, or a heart shaped cake.valentine's-day-cake

This year, following the success of the birthday red velvet cake which is all gone, I thought I’d make another one  – only leaving out the cocoa. I used the same recipe and beetroot again and thought the cake would be pink inside,  but it’s not. It’s a dark yellowy brown and I’m not sure  why. It must be something to do with the bicarbonate of soda, but it didn’t seem to make a difference before. It’s a mystery, as my father would say.

It still tastes nice (and you really wouldn’t know there’s beetroot in it) and it means I’ll just have to keep experimenting.  Shame.

Grannie came round to help us eat it and even Hermione made a rare appearance – and ate some cabbage charmingly. hermioneArlo-Grannie-and-Hermione
