We wore red

April 17, 2013

I didn’t dare put the radio on today just in case  I caught  a snippet  of coverage of the event that’s squandering sinful amounts of public money at a time when the welfare budget is being dramatically slashed and most of the nation is facing severe austerity. As the postcard says, we are in this mess because we baled out the banks, not because we overspent on welfare.

To join in the silent protest I wore a red coat (in the rain) and Mauve came round sporting a red T shirt.

Later I made jam tarts – using red jam of course. The jam was one we made last year using grapes from the garden and bilberries from the moor. It’s pleasingly tart, which I think is what you need for the occasional jam tart. The pastry was a simple half fat to flour mix – no sugar or anything added (I also made a cheese and mushroom flan and a Bakewell tart because if I’m going to the effort of making pastry it seems sensible to make plenty).

I sprinkled coconut on  my jam tarts.  Arlo said “Why did you put coconut on the top?”  I reminded him that when we were in York I’d done it and Jeaniegran had said that her mother always used to sprinkle coconut on jam tarts (funny, so does mine) so I thought I’d carry on the tradition. A kind of reaching out across the generations thing.

“I think you just can’t leave things alone” said Arlo.

Lovely, such an appropriate colour for today. I couldn’t even listen to coverage on Radio 4, I’m disgusted by the flagrant waste of money this country doesn’t have to spend.

What do you think?
